On the list of conservative gripes with Senator McCain, joining the “Gang of 14” and thwarting the Bush/Cheney judicial “nuclear option” usually makes the top ten. Now, after the Bush implosion and the Obama landslide, conservatives should thank the Gang for saving the last ounce of Republican power. Democrats will not hit the magic number 60 in the Senate, allowing Republicans (because of the Gang's success) to block the most egregious judges and bills proposed by the new party controlling all of D.C.
At the time Republicans controlled the Senate with (I believe) 55 votes, and McCain was labeled a turncoat for sacrificing a few controversial judicial appointees in order to save the filibuster rule. As long time West Virginia Democratic Senator and Gang member Robert C. Byrd noted at the time, there might come a time when the Republicans would again want to use “old man filibuster.”
Listen to your elders young whipper-snappers, for that day is today.
