The National Cathedral (Episcopal) hosts a variety of speakers and events. Some like N.T. Wright and Bishop Desmond Tutu are wonderful gifts to all. Then there are the other events.
An expansive brochure for "Sacred Circles: A Celebration of Women's Spirituality" recently arrived at my home. It details a numerically impressive panel of 39 speakers and workshop leaders.
Among the presenters are Buddists, Muslims, Jewish Rabbis, Hindus, and one person (Esther de Waal) identified with "historic Christian traditions."
Words like Gaia, deep ecology, yoga, Oprah, meditation, kindness as a force, feminine divine, and sacred feminine abound. The words "Jesus" and "Bible" are nowhere to be found though.
One workshop description says, "Emphasis will be placed on trusting your unique path and becoming your own spiritual authority."
The featured quote is as follows:
We live as part of a fabric of a greater whole. Every spiritual tradition and every faith tradition shows us this. Science shows us this. Economics shows us this, and to respond from that wisdom is compassion.
All of this universalist enlightenment can be yours for only $199.

In our desire to be "tolerant" we have sacrificed our integrity to the truth of God's Holy Word.
I call it the "Oprah drift". She used to at least pay lip service to the faith of her childhood and acknowledged God. Now it appears that in her desire not to antagonize any viewers, she is inclusive and gives equal weight to any kind of "spiritual enlightenment" self help guru that comes across her path.
Truth is simple but it comes at a price. We have to humble ourselves before God and acknowledge that only He has the power to transform lives. It involved sacrifice, it was done on a cross, and it was done for us, not to us.
