At the recent Red Hot Lies book event (discussed in more detail here), fast talking author Chris Horner mocked a an unnamed critic's response to Horner's "You've got to exploit it" future hydrocarbon strategy.
The straw man reportedly said, "You're treating the Earth like it's a resource." Horner gave the audience an are you serious look and said sarcastically, "OK, we'll agree to agree on that," drawing the desired incredulous laughter.
Nice line for this crowd. But what if, instead of just a resource, we treated the Earth like it's our home.
Homes are resources, no doubt: they provide shelter that we could not live without. Yet, a home is not treated like a gravel pit. A home's value is based on our intimate relationship to it. We invest in a home for the long term. We hope to pass it on to our children more valuable than before. Hopefully that approach will soon be one that we can agree to agree on.
