John McCain just gave his VA victory speech. Interestingly, it targets Obama. CNN did not seem to pick that up immediately, but McCain clearly contrasted his "humble" approach to serving a nation that saved him against Obama's messianic oratory. The presumptive front-runner even closed by saying he was "fired up and ready to go" a reference to Obama's GOTV story of the South Carolina local politician's chant that the Illinois senator has appropriated.
This brings to an end a full week of political activity. From the U of Maryland rally where I hoped my "Crunchy Cons for Huck" sign would make it on the air; to working the Dulles Expo Gun Show for the Huckster; to slip sliding away to vote for Mike. In the end it has worked out pretty well. Huckabee made a solid showing but not enough to truly embarrass McCain. I feel like I'm in a great spot, having my top two guys on top with no Romney or Rudy to worry about anymore. I've supported both of them about equally in donations, and if this vote wasn't a "safe" one, it might have been more difficult to decide. A McCain / Huckabee ticket is the dream, but it may just be that. Huckabee brings some Red State passion and the ability to tell McCain's story better than McCain can himself. Yet, the Rush Radio crowd and the dollar-cons will push for a "true" conservative and Huckabee has only slightly less baggage than McCain. John McCain is his own man though and may take Huckabee because they genuinely like and respect each other. We'll see. Huck will run in Texas to build his base for the future and then gracefully bow out when McCain hits the magic number. It's been a great ride for the man from Hope though.
